A deep clean is more than a quick tidy — it's the top-to-bottom reset that reaches the places a weekly routine never touches. If your home hasn't had one in a while, or you're preparing for guests, a move, or a change of season, this checklist will walk you through it room by room.
Work top to bottom, left to right
Dust always falls. Start with ceilings, vents, and light fixtures, then work your way down to floors last. Move consistently in one direction so you don't re-dirty clean surfaces.
Kitchen
- Wipe the range hood and backsplash to remove grease buildup
- Clean the oven interior, racks, and the stovetop including burner drip pans
- Vacuum and wipe the inside of the fridge, drawers, and door seals
- Wipe cabinetry fronts, handles, and the tops of cabinets where dust collects
- Run an empty dishwasher cycle with vinegar to clear odors
- Sweep, then mop the floor — including under the fridge and stove if possible
Bathrooms
- Descale the showerhead and scrub grout lines and tile
- Clean the inside and outside of the toilet, including the base and behind the bowl
- Wash the shower curtain or liner, or wipe down glass doors
- Wipe the vanity, mirror, and cabinet fronts inside and out
- Wash or replace bath mats and launder towels
Bedrooms & Living Areas
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents
- Wipe baseboards, door frames, and switch plates — easy to forget, always noticeable
- Vacuum under furniture and along the edges of carpets
- Wash bedding and rotate or vacuum the mattress
- Clean windows, tracks, and blinds
The Forgotten Spots
These are the places that separate a deep clean from a surface clean:
- Behind and under large appliances
- Inside cupboards and drawers (empty and wipe them)
- Light switch plates, handles, and remotes
- Air vents and return grilles
- Inside trash cans and recycling bins
How often should you do this?
Most homes do well with a professional deep clean two to four times a year, with routine cleaning in between. Homes with pets, allergies, or young children often benefit from doing it more often.
